Measure the premium and the exit together

Gold coin with two quotation folders, an editorial illustration of purchase and buyback.
Editorial illustration.

Ask for two written quotations for the same identifiable product at approximately the same time: the amount you must pay to acquire it and the net amount the dealer would pay to buy it back. Record the quote time and expiry. Comparing a morning purchase offer with an afternoon buyback mixes the dealer’s spread with a move in the gold price.

To measure an all-in acquisition premium, subtract the benchmark metal value from the total payable and divide by that metal value. Keep making charges, delivery, payment fees and tax as separate invoice entries even if the calculator combines them. For a hypothetical product containing 10 fine grams at AED 350 per fine gram, the benchmark is AED 3,500. A total payable of AED 3,640 implies a 4% premium.

Now suppose the simultaneous net buyback offer is AED 3,395. Selling immediately would recover 93.27% of the purchase outlay, a loss of 6.73% before any additional exit expense. That calculation describes these invented quotations only. It does not mean that a 6.73% rise in the gold benchmark guarantees breakeven: future buyback terms and deductions can change.

Tax treatment deserves its own check. Qualifying investment precious metals meet both the purity and bullion-market-form conditions for zero-rating; high purity alone is insufficient. Jewellery may carry the standard VAT treatment. The domestic reverse charge described in FTA VATP043 concerns qualifying transactions between registrants and has additional conditions. Ask the supplier to identify the treatment on the actual invoice. Confirm whether repurchase depends on intact packaging, an original invoice, a specific refiner or a new assay, and who pays any testing deduction.

July 2019 guidance, section 4.1.4 and footnote 7: qualifying investment gold, silver and platinum must meet purity 99% or more and global-bullion-market form conditions. Read together with current law and the supplier’s transaction classification. Checked 1 November 2026.

  • Federal Tax Authority — VATP043 Precious Metals and Precious Stones ↗

1 May 2025 clarification. Explicitly replaces VATP032 and describes conditions for the domestic reverse charge between registrants, including resale/manufacturing intent and declaration/verification. It is a distinct mechanism from a zero-rated investment-metal supply. Checked 1 November 2026.

General 5% VAT rule, subject to statutory zero-rating or exemption. Page dated 22 May 2024; checked 1 November 2026. Confirm actual invoice treatment for the individual supply.
