The session is context, not a signal
A trading session describes a window of participation. It does not promise a direction. Gold trades through connected over-the-counter and exchange markets, while the XAU/USD chart on your screen represents a particular provider. London activity, New York activity and Asian activity overlap with economic releases and institutional workflows. The useful question is whether your defined setup behaves differently across those windows after costs, rather than whether London always breaks an Asian range.
Build the clock before studying the chart
Store observations in UTC and derive session labels using named zones such as Europe/London and America/New_York. Their daylight-saving changes do not always happen on the same dates. Dubai remains on UTC+4. Consequently, a fixed Dubai hour is not a permanent substitute for a New York event time. Define the windows before analysing results and record their boundaries explicitly. A broker maintenance break is separate from a regional session.
Measure activity with comparable units
For each window, record high minus low, absolute return, spread samples and available volume information. A provider’s tick volume counts updates; it is not consolidated global gold turnover. Compare like-for-like windows of equal duration or explain the difference. A larger price range may reflect news rather than an inherently superior session. Separate scheduled-release days from quieter days and retain both in the dataset.
A worked observation protocol
As a hypothetical exercise, mark a four-hour observation range and then measure the next two hours. Record the initial range width, first crossing time, closing location and maximum extension. A 12-dollar range followed by a 4-dollar extension gives an extension-to-range ratio of one third. These invented values illustrate measurement only. Save the same fields when the price remains inside the range; otherwise the study silently selects only dramatic days.
Liquidity and execution are different from movement
A fast move can coexist with poor executable prices. A narrow displayed spread does not guarantee enough available size at that quotation. Before comparing session profitability, include commissions, spread, slippage and financing where relevant. Check trading hours and holidays for your exact contract. CME gold futures schedules do not automatically define the dealing hours of every broker’s spot derivative.
Turn the observation into a rule you can test
Write a complete rule: instrument, timezone, window, trigger, invalidation, permitted order type and no-trade conditions. Test it on a later period without changing the window to fit the result. Compare median outcomes, adverse excursions and sample counts, not just average gains. If the apparent advantage disappears with realistic costs, the session pattern may be interesting but economically unusable.
A practical reading path
Start with support and resistance to define the range boundaries. Continue with breakout evaluation and execution risk before attempting a session strategy. In the Research Lab, inspect missing candles before calculating hourly statistics; missing observations can make one session look artificially quiet. Keep a screenshot of the original setup and record what you knew before the next candle closed.
