Where did a GLD shareholder’s fraction of an ounce go?

An investor can keep exactly the same number of GLD shares while each share represents slightly less gold. The trust’s cash-flow statement explains where the difference goes.

THE RESEARCH QUESTION
  • The June-quarter filing separates gold sold for expenses from gold delivered on redemption.
  • The cash proceeds of a sale and the accounting gain on that sale measure different things.
  • Track ounces per share at two dates to investigate the effect on a continuing holder.

Trace a quarter’s cash payment

In the three months ended 30 June 2026, SPDR Gold Trust reported selling 34,843.1 ounces of gold to meet expenses. Its cash-flow statement records $161.121 million of sale proceeds and the same sum paid out in cash expenses. The trust also recorded a realised gain on the gold it sold. That gain measures proceeds above the metal’s accounting cost. It cannot be substituted for the amount of cash used to pay the bills.

The sponsor fee accrues daily at an annual rate of 0.40% of net asset value under the terms described in the filing. Accrual and payment can fall on different dates. Dividing one quarter’s cash sale by the final day’s holdings will therefore give a different calculation from applying the annual rate to daily NAV.

Watch what happens to one continuing holder

Consider a hypothetical trust with 1,000 ounces and 10,000 shares. Each share initially represents 0.1000 ounce. Suppose it sells one ounce for expenses, with no shares created or redeemed. Its 999 remaining ounces divided by 10,000 shares give 0.0999 ounce per share. An investor holding 100 shares has moved from an indirect interest in 10 ounces to 9.99 ounces. The brokerage statement can show exactly the same share count throughout.

At an assumed constant gold price of $4,000, that metal difference is $40 for the example holder. With a rising bullion price the shares could still rise in dollar terms. This illustration isolates a single expense sale and ignores outstanding liabilities, timing and market premiums. It gives neither GLD’s actual price nor a forecast of its return.

Reconcile metal and shares on the same dates

For a real comparison, take two dated observations from the issuer’s ounces-per-share series. Alongside them retain the monthly gold-sales-per-share record. A redemption removes shares as well as metal, whereas an expense sale finances a bill without retiring the continuing holder’s shares. That is why a decline in the trust’s aggregate inventory alone is insufficient to quantify the holder’s change.

I would investigate a residual by checking the timing of pending basket settlements and accrued liabilities, and then compare the exchange price with the reported NAV per share. This preserves three separate quantities in the file: gold exposure, the trust’s valuation after liabilities, and the price an investor could transact at. The June filing provides a dated reconciliation in an unaudited quarterly statement. It supplies no November flow estimate.
