Who can exchange GLD shares for gold?

A buyer can purchase one GLD share on the exchange. Returning shares to the SPDR Gold Trust for bullion requires a different route. That distinction explains how shares can trade briskly without a single new bar entering the trust.

THE RESEARCH QUESTION
  • Ordinary GLD trading transfers existing shares between investors.
  • Direct dealings with the trust use authorized participants and 100,000-share baskets.
  • In the June quarter, 514 baskets of gross activity produced a net reduction of 144 baskets.

One share changes hands

Suppose one investor sells 40 GLD shares and another buys them. After settlement the buyer owns the shares and the seller receives the proceeds. The trust can start and finish that transaction with the same number of shares outstanding and the same gold holdings. A screen reporting the 40 shares as trading volume tells us nothing on its own about a delivery to the custodian.

The sponsor lists a trading size of one share. The US prospectus describes a separate arrangement for dealing directly with the trust. Only an authorized participant can place a creation or redemption order, in baskets of 100,000 shares. Reaching that quantity in a brokerage account does not itself make the holder an authorized participant. A retail investor who wants a particular bar should check what delivery rights the actual product grants before comparing it with a bullion purchase.

What moves when the trust issues shares?

For a creation, the authorized participant arranges the required gold deposit and receives newly issued shares. A redemption goes the other way. The participant tenders shares in the required quantity and receives the corresponding gold distribution. The transaction follows the trust’s basket terms, including any applicable cash amount. The basket specifies a share count. Its gold entitlement depends on the applicable calculation, so 100,000 is never the number of ounces to plug into an inventory estimate.

An investor trying to explain a price premium can ask whether someone could buy the necessary gold, deliver it and sell the resulting shares at a sufficient spread after costs. That incentive helps explain the creation mechanism. A premium observed on a screen does not establish that anyone actually completed that sequence. To establish creation, look for the change in shares or a trust disclosure.

A real quarter with activity in both directions

In its filing for the three months ended 30 June 2026, the trust recorded 185 baskets created and 329 redeemed. Gross activity therefore reached 514 baskets. Subtract creations from redemptions and the net reduction comes to 144 baskets, or 14.4 million shares. Reading only the net figure would hide the 18.5 million shares that were issued along the way.

The filing also reports gold sold to meet expenses. If I were reconciling the custody balance, I would enter those ounces separately from the gold distributed against redeemed shares. For an investor comparing GLD with a bar stored in Dubai, that separation answers a concrete ownership question. With shares, the route back to cash normally runs through a securities sale. With a bar, the buyer’s bid, the bar’s acceptability and custody terms matter at exit. Neither the June basket totals nor an exchange volume print gives today’s executable price for either route.
