INVESTMENT FLOWS
Gold ETF Flows & Investor Demand
Distinguish metal holdings, money flows and changes in assets under management.

Three measures, three different questions
Gold holdings measure the amount of metal represented by the covered funds. Net fund flows track money entering or leaving. Assets under management also change when the gold price moves. A rising fund valuation therefore does not, on its own, prove new investor buying.
Use the provider’s definitions
World Gold Council publishes ETF holdings and flows with a methodology note. Its distinction between changes in gold holdings and dollar fund flows matters when comparing regions. Preserve the dataset vintage, covered funds, units and period; do not compare a weekly observation with a monthly total as if they measured the same window.
Interpretation needs a competing explanation
A flow trend can provide context for investment demand, but it is not a trading signal by itself. Ask whether flows lead, follow or simply coincide with price over the chosen sample. Compare favorable and unfavorable examples. A regional outflow alongside a global inflow is not necessarily a contradiction; the aggregation level changes the question.
Questions before drawing a conclusion
- Is the change in tonnes, dollars or AUM?
- Are all regions measured over the same period?
- Is the result concentrated in a few funds?
