Separate activity, outstanding contracts and trader positioning before interpreting a crowded trade.

Futures Positioning, Volume & Open Interest — editorial illustration

Volume is not open interest

Volume counts contracts traded over an interval. Open interest counts outstanding contracts at the reporting point. High volume can occur without a persistent increase in outstanding exposure. Each open futures contract has both a long and a short, so rising open interest alone cannot identify a net buyer of the entire market.

Read the category and the observation date

CFTC Commitments of Traders reports break down reportable positions by trader category. Use one report format consistently and distinguish futures-only from futures-and-options-combined data. Check the current release schedule and the position date printed in the report; publication is delayed relative to observation and schedules can change.

Settlement is a contract-specific reference

CME end-of-day datasets include settlement, volume and open interest. Name the delivery month and exchange. A continuous futures series needs an explicit contract-roll convention. Its change can differ from spot gold, especially around a contract switch; a rolled series should not silently become the price a trader could execute.

What to test before calling positioning extreme

Define extreme relative to a stated history and trader category. A percentile in one sample can change when the window changes. Evaluate how long crowded positioning persisted and how often a reversal failed to follow. Avoid treating an extreme as a deadline for the market to reverse.

Questions before drawing a conclusion

  • Which contract and report format?
  • What is the position date, and when was it released?
  • Did a contract roll change the comparison?
