THE PHYSICAL MARKET
Physical Gold: Demand, Mining & Recycling
Understand the difference between physical demand categories and the price of a quoted ounce.

Physical demand is not one buyer
Jewellery, bars and coins, technology and official-sector demand represent different uses and decision processes. They should not be collapsed into one daily sentiment reading. A higher gold price can affect the quantity purchased, recycling incentives and the dollar value of demand in different directions.
Supply has several components
World Gold Council’s dataset separates mine production, recycling and producer hedging. Read the methodology before adding or comparing categories. Production capacity and project decisions operate on longer horizons than an intraday XAU/USD move; a mine announcement is not the same thing as newly available deliverable metal.
A retail premium needs a comparable product
A retail bar or coin price can include fabrication, distribution, dealer spread and other product-specific costs. Compare like-for-like weight, fineness, currency and timestamp. A premium in one local product does not establish a global shortage. A quote to sell a product and the price offered to buy it back answer different questions.
Questions before drawing a conclusion
- Which category, geography and quarter?
- Is the figure tonnes or spending value?
- Are product specifications and buyback terms comparable?
