Gold Event Studies Without Hindsight: Vintages, Surprises and Controls

A modern economic spreadsheet can tell a cleaner story than traders could have known at the time. A credible event study must reconstruct the information set before it measures the market response.

THE RESEARCH QUESTION
  • Use first-release vintages for questions about the original market reaction.
  • Call a study a surprise study only when pre-release expectations are documented.
  • Pre-specify clocks, exclusions and controls, then evaluate on separate observations.

Define the question narrowly

Start with one release family, one gold instrument and one observation rule. For example, study how a named gold feed behaved over fixed windows around an employment release. Decide in advance whether the outcome is a return, maximum adverse movement, volatility change or a probability defined by a specific threshold.

Do not begin by collecting impressive charts and then inventing a common explanation. Write the proposed mechanism first, along with an alternative that could produce the same observation. The goal is to design a test that can disagree with the initial idea, not to build a gallery of confirmations.

Preserve what was actually available

The St. Louis Fed distinguishes the latest historical data from the information available during a past real-time period. ALFRED supports retrieving earlier vintages. That distinction matters when a present-day download contains revisions unavailable to a trader on the original release date.

For each event, store the first reported figure, its release timestamp, later revisions and the source vintage separately. BLS explains that payroll estimates receive subsequent monthly revisions and an annual benchmark process. A revised series is valuable for studying the economy, but inserting it into a simulation of the first market response changes the question being tested.

A surprise needs a genuinely prior expectation

Define surprise as the released value minus a forecast captured before publication, with compatible units and seasonal treatment. Save the forecast provider, the collection cutoff and the individual release being forecast. If a trustworthy historical consensus is unavailable, do not substitute a forecast reconstructed after the outcome.

An event study can still examine returns around a release without a consensus archive. It should then be described as a release-window study, not as evidence about positive or negative surprises. This narrower label is more informative than a precise-looking surprise variable assembled from uncertain inputs.

Align the clock before measuring the move

Keep both official release time and the data vendor’s observation timestamps. Translate daylight-saving changes explicitly and verify whether a candle timestamp denotes its start or its end. A fifteen-minute candle containing the release can include both pre-release and post-release trading.

Choose a baseline observable before the release and a rule for the first usable observation afterward. Apply the same rule across events. If the feed has a gap or a suspicious repeated price, flag that event rather than allowing interpolation to manufacture a smooth response. A day-level vintage is helpful, but it does not prove the exact second a value reached a particular trading system.

Build a comparison that asks a real question

Compare release windows with non-event windows matched on time of day and a pre-specified volatility measure. Exclude overlapping major announcements using a rule set before examining returns. This can help identify whether the event window was unusual relative to ordinary trading at a similar time.

Matched controls do not establish perfect causality. Unobserved news, changing liquidity and regime differences can remain. Report the number of events and controls, the matching rule and how results change under reasonable alternative windows. A very small sample should be presented as exploratory, especially if many release families or thresholds were tried.

Separate discovery from confirmation

Use an initial development sample to choose the research design, then reserve later observations for evaluation without further tuning. Preserve an experiment log, including versions that failed to produce an interesting result. Otherwise repeated searches can turn ordinary variation into an apparently reliable pattern.

The finished note should show the distribution, unfavourable observations and uncertainty—not only an average response. Keep economic revisions, missing expectations and ambiguous timestamps visible in the limitations. This article proposes a method; it reports no completed backtest, predictive edge or trading performance. The next useful step is a reproducible dataset, not a stronger claim.
